Summer Holiday Sushi Workshops

Kids love sushi! and even if they say they don't, they usually do by the end of one of our workshops...

This summer we are hosting two different sushi-making workshops for children aged 6-14 at The Plough, Upper Wolvercote.  These are hands-on events where the children will learn to make and eat their own sushi. We won't be including any raw fish and there will be no knives (only grown ups will cut the sushi).  Classes last apprx 1.5 hours and parents/carers are required to remain on site at the pub for the duration of the class (there's a great menu and lovely beer garden available).

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling

In this class we will concentrate on making sushi rolls using a traditional bamboo rolling mat, nori and sushi rice.  The children will see how the rice is prepared and learn to roll their own sushi which will then be cut by an adult.  They can eat the sushi as we go, or save and bring home in a sushi container which we provide.  Please bring a cool bag if you think your child may like to bring their sushi home (there is a lot of sushi!)

Here's what we will make:

Uzumaki spiral roll with soft cheese and cucumber

California roll inside out roll with seafood stick & cucumber rolled in black & white sesame seeds

Veggie maki large roll stuffed full of colourful, crunchy veggies

We will end the class by making an origami chopstick pocket for our bamboo chopsticks.

Classes run 12-1.30pm on Monday August 19th

£18 per child, please inform us of any food allergies or special dietary requirements when you book, vegetarian alternatives available on request - please email us as soon as you have booked your tickets to arrange.  Parent/carer must remain on site for the duration of the class.

Creative Sushi

In this class we will make some different types of sushi which do not require the usual rolling mat and can be fun for creative children.  As with the other class, there is a lot of food so if you think your child won't eat all of their sushi during the class please bring a cool bag to take the rest home (we provide the container).

Here's what we will make:

Temaki cone shaped hand roll with seafood stick & veggies.  These can be made even more delicious with the addition of Japanese mayonnaise, sweet soy sauce or spicy mayo.  This is one sushi which is best enjoyed as soon as it is made as the nori remains beautifully crisp.

Temari sushi we will make 4 little rice balls and enjoy topping them with a variety of ingredients including prawn, smoked salmon, cucumber, radish and many more.  We will have fun creating garnish using mini cutters and other tools to decorate the temari sushi.  We will be using regular sushi rice and pink rice (coloured with a little beetroot juice)

Inari sushi tofu pouches which have been cooked in a sweet sauce made from soy, sugar and salt - we will fill these with sushi rice and top with a selection of garnish

Gunkan 'Battleship' sushi we will make 2 gunkan, one with corn mayo and the other with goma wakame (seaweed salad)

We will end the class by making an origami chopstick pocket for our bamboo chopsticks.

Classes run 12-1.30pm on Tuesday August 20th

£20 per child, please inform us of any food allergies or special dietary requirements when you book, vegetarian alternatives available on request - please email us as soon as you have booked your tickets to arrange.  Parent/carer must remain on site for the duration of the class.
